Inspirational Quotes and Poems

There are many inspiring quotations on compassion, courage, and love by famous people, and I have included some of the ones which help me. However, the ones that are the most inspiring are the ones that Joshua liked or penned himself in his journals, notes, and scriptures. We consider his thoughts sacred and precious to us, and we have listed below some of those that would be appropriate to share with you.

Then, I have added general quotes that have meaning to me (with an an attempt to attribute them to their original authors if possible).

Quotes or Scriptures Josh Liked (and where he kept them)

"The discouraging idea that a mistake (or even a series of them) makes it everlastingly too late does not come from the Lord. He has said that if we will repent, not only will He forgive us our transgressions, but He will forget them and remember our sins no more." - Boyd K. Packer

- Hanging on Josh's bulletin board and then on the fridge

"No man knows another's heart."

- A note Josh kept on his dresser

"Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God." - Moroni 10:32 (Book of Mormon)

"The greatest miracles I see today are not necessarily the healing of sick bodies, but the greatest miracles I see are the healing of sick souls, those who are sick in soul and spirit and are downhearted and distraught . . ." - Harold B. Lee, Ensign, July 1973, page 123.

- Typed on a small paper and pasted into Joshua's scriptures

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." - Mathew 5:16

General Quotations

"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass; it's about learning to dance in the rain." Author Unknown

"There is no foot so small that it cannot leave an imprint on this world". Author Unknown

"Grief is not a disorder, a disease or a sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical and spiritual necessity, the price you pay for love. The only cure for grief is to grieve." - Earl Grollman (Lecturer, Writer, and Grief Counselor)

"Nothing you love is lost. Not really. Things, people, they always go away sooner or later. You can't hold them anymore than you can hold moonlight." - Bruce Coville (Author)

"I walked a mile with Pleasure.
She chattered all the way.
But left me none the wiser,
For all she had to say.
I walked a mile with Sorrow,
And ne'er a word said she;
But oh, the things I learned from her,
When Sorrow walked with me!"

- Robert Browning (English Poet and Playwright)

"Suicide is what the death certificate says when one dies of depression." - Peter D. Kramer (American Psychiatrist)

"Death is opposite of birth. Death is not opposite of life. What takes birth dies but the life continues." - Anonymous

"Every man dies - Not every man really lives." - William Ross Wallace (American Poet)

"What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal." - Albert Pike (Attorney and Writer)

"What you possess in the world will be found at the day of your death to belong to someone else. But what you are will be yours forever." - Henry Van Dyke (American Author and Poet)

" I am standing upon that foreshore.

A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength and I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white clouds just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, "There! She's gone!"

"Gone where?"

"Gone from my sight, that's all". She is just as large in mast and spar and hull as ever she was when she left my side; just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of her destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at that moment when someone at my side says, "There! She's gone!" there are other eyes watching her coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, 'Here she comes!' And that is dying."

Victor Hugo, from, "Toilers of the Sea"
